U.S. President Donald Trump has reported substantial strides in diplomacy with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as led by special envoy Steve Witkoff. This development comes amid U.S. preparations to enforce secondary sanctions this Friday, targeting nations that continue business with Russia.

Trump's announcement, echoed on Truth Social, highlighted the fundamental agreement among global leaders on the necessity to conclude the 3-1/2-year conflict instigated by Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Despite the lack of specifics, Trump's optimistic tone was reinforced by a White House official, noting Moscow's willingness to further engage in dialogue with the United States.

In line with diplomatic efforts, Trump initiated a 25% tariff on Indian imports, citing the country's persistent importation of Russian oil. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has forewarned China of possible severe tariffs if it maintains sanctioned oil purchases. As discussions persist, the U.S. seeks to extend a tariff truce set to lapse on August 12.
