Diesel and Petrol Vehicles Ban Faces Roadblock
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has not conducted research on pollution from old diesel and petrol vehicles, despite recent restrictions based on court orders. An enforcement delay until October 31 was granted due to operational challenges. The issue affects millions of vehicles in Delhi and the NCR region.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has acknowledged its lack of research on pollution caused by aging diesel and petrol vehicles. Despite this, the overage vehicle ban in Delhi-NCR is based on rulings from the National Green Tribunal and the Supreme Court.
Answering an RTI filed by environmentalist Amit Gupta, CAQM revealed no studies underpinning its prohibition of these older vehicles. The delay of enforcement until October 31 comes as Delhi grapples with infrastructural difficulties.
Delhi's government cites software issues with the Automated Number Plate Recognition system as a barrier to enforcement. Millions of old vehicles in the region continue contributing to pollution while awaiting resolution from higher courts and CAQM's plans.
