President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially invited the public to nominate candidates for the next cohort of Commissioners to serve on the Presidential Climate Commission (PCC). This follows the announcement that the term of the current commissioners will come to an end at the close of 2025.

According to the Presidency, the PCC plays a pivotal role in shaping South Africa’s climate policy direction. Established as an advisory body, it is tasked with facilitating social dialogue and providing informed advice on how the country can transition toward a low-emissions, climate-resilient economy while ensuring that national transformation and social justice remain central to the process.

Purpose and Mandate of the PCC

The Presidency emphasised that the Commission’s primary objective is to “enable and inspire an action-oriented process towards a long-term just transition.” This means the PCC must not only examine South Africa’s environmental challenges but also integrate economic and social considerations to ensure no community or sector is left behind.

In carrying out its mandate, the PCC must engage in transparent and inclusive public participation processes, ensuring recommendations are guided by the best available science and grounded in the principles of a just transition. These principles emphasise fairness, inclusivity, and protection for vulnerable groups as the nation moves towards a sustainable future.

Appointment Process and Eligibility

The appointment process is guided by Sections 10(4)(a) and 12(1)(a) of the Climate Change Act, 2024 (Act No. 22 of 2024). Under this law, the President—who serves as the Commission’s Chairperson—appoints Commissioners for a five-year term from among individuals deemed “fit and proper” with proven expertise in relevant fields.

Areas of experience sought include:

  • Climate change and environmental policy

  • Sustainable development

  • Economic development

  • Energy

  • Social justice

In addition, appointments must reflect South Africa’s diverse interests and demographics, ensuring that the Commission’s work represents the voices and concerns of different communities, sectors, and social partners.

Public Participation Encouraged

President Ramaphosa called on South Africans—alongside social partners, civil society, and community organisations—to take advantage of the nomination process to ensure that their priorities are reflected in the PCC’s work.

“This is a crucial opportunity to nominate the best among ourselves to shape the journey towards an inclusive and sustainable economy and society that is fair and just,” the President said.

How to Nominate

Nomination details and application forms are available on the Presidency’s website:

The new Commissioners will be responsible for advising on policy measures, monitoring progress towards national climate goals, and fostering collaboration among government, industry, academia, and civil society. Their work will directly influence South Africa’s ability to meet international climate commitments and to achieve a fair transition that benefits all.
