The Leader of the Opposition in the Assam assembly, Debabrata Saikia, has called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah to address the ongoing challenges in border management between Assam and Bangladesh. Saikia's call to action follows a series of pushback operations by the police along the border.
In a letter to Shah, Saikia highlighted that the state government has repeatedly recognized these operations and the deportation of undocumented Bangladeshi nationals. He questioned the effectiveness of the current border management framework and the coordination between central and state security agencies.
Saikia emphasized the need for a comprehensive review of the Border Security Force (BSF) deployment and strategies. He advocated for improved coordination between the BSF and Assam Police, alongside a shift towards technology-based border surveillance mechanisms. Saikia also called for diplomatic efforts with Bangladesh to address infiltration root causes and recommended clear guidelines for handling infiltrators.
