Lt General Dinesh Singh Rana, Commanding Officer of the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC), has expressed concerns over intrusions by 'extra-regional forces' into the archipelago due to its strategic value.
Speaking to PTI, Rana emphasized the necessity for ongoing surveillance of the islands. He pointed out that the ANC is transitioning from being just a distant outpost to a strategic military center, with vigilance on all naval vessels as needed.
Research vessels frequently patrol near significant underwater ridges, which are abundant in poly-metallic nodules. These areas also host crucial underwater sea cables linking to Southeast Asia, ideal for surveillance sensors and submarines. Thus, the emphasis on bolstering underwater domain awareness grows vital.
Highlighting the importance of the 836 islands, Rana stated their pivotal role in controlling the Malacca Strait and the 6-degree channel, through which a significant portion of global trade flows. The ANC shoulders the responsibility of coastal security, encompassing the Exclusive Economic Zone and averting potential threats like terrorism, illegal immigration, and drug trafficking. Enhanced automated surveillance is crucial amid regional instability.
