The Bombay High Court marked a significant development with the inauguration of a new circuit bench at Kolhapur, opened by Chief Justice B R Gavai on Sunday. Maharashtra's top political leaders, including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, attended the ceremonious event.
This addition aims to address longstanding requests to ease travel strains on litigants and legal professionals within six districts, who previously journeyed 380 km to Mumbai. The Kolhapur bench adds to three existing benches in Mumbai, Nagpur, and Aurangabad, including another in Goa.
Functional from August 18, the Kolhapur bench, featuring Justices M S Karnik and Sharmila Deshmukh, as well as Justices S G Dige and S G Chapalgaonkar, will oversee civil and criminal cases, including public interest litigations and various appeals from the region's Konkan area.
