Recent diplomatic talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have opened the door to possible Ukraine peace negotiations, according to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. A follow-up meeting involving Ukrainian and European leaders is set to occur in Washington on Monday.

Rubio, speaking on CBS's 'Face the Nation,' emphasized that while a peace deal isn't imminent, there has been enough progress to justify further discussions. A key point of contention remains Ukraine's potential involvement in military alliances, as Russia staunchly opposes Ukraine joining NATO.

U.S. negotiations led by Steve Witkoff suggest that the U.S. is considering offering Article Five-like security guarantees directly to Ukraine, independent of NATO. However, significant work remains to reach a viable peace agreement that satisfies all parties involved.
