The Rajya Sabha witnessed the introduction of the Indian Ports Bill 2025 on Monday, despite significant opposition protests. Intended to consolidate laws related to ports and support integrated port development, the bill is also designed to facilitate business and fully utilize India's coastline.
Earlier cleared by the Lok Sabha, the bill was presented by Union Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. It aims to establish State Maritime Boards and the Maritime State Development Council, enhancing the management of ports beyond major ones.
Amid cries for discussion on Bihar's electoral roll revision, opposition members staged a walkout. Nevertheless, the agenda proceeded with the focus on streamlining port operations, tackling emergencies, ensuring safety, and aligning with international standards.
