Ranchi's judiciary granted bail to suspended IAS officer Vinay Kumar Choubey in a liquor scam due to the Anti-Corruption Bureau's delay in filing a charge sheet. Despite this reprieve, Choubey remains incarcerated because of separate allegations relating to land dealings in Hazaribagh.
The court emphasized that after 92 days without a charge sheet, Choubey was entitled to default bail, a position supported by multiple Supreme Court precedents, according to his lawyer, Devesh Ajmani. Under Section 187(2) of the BNSS, Choubey's bail included conditions not to leave Jharkhand and to maintain his current contact information.
The IAS officer had previously contested the legitimacy of the FIR in the liquor case, arguing it was not tenable. As further disputes unravel, opposition leader Babulal Marandi accused the state government of strategically delaying proceedings to obstruct the Enforcement Directorate's investigation into broader financial misconduct.
