In a landmark decision, the Lok Sabha passed a bill on Wednesday that aims to curb the negative impacts of online money games. The legislation targets operators, advertisers, and financial facilitators of such games, which officials say lead to addiction and financial misconduct.
The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, pushed forward by the Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, seeks to prohibit online betting and gambling activities, categorizing penalties for violators, including potential imprisonment and substantial fines.
The bill also promotes eSports and online social gaming, diverging from money-focused gaming, by providing legal recognition and support. This legislative move is intended to address public health concerns and safeguard financial integrity, aligning digital law with existing physical world regulations against gambling.
