The Kerala High Court on Wednesday extended interim protection from arrest for rapper Hirandas Murali, famously known as Vedan, until August 25. Vedan faces serious allegations of rape and sexual harassment, with the complainant accusing him of establishing a sexual relationship under false promises of marriage.

Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas, who previously granted Vedan protection, extended the order during a hearing of Vedan's anticipatory bail plea. The complainant, a doctor, accuses Vedan of multiple offenses between 2021 and 2023, citing similar complaints in the past and possible negligence in evidence collection by investigators.

While noting that a promise of marriage doesn't automatically constitute a criminal act, the court acknowledged the need for more concrete evidence. Vedan's celebratory public appearance following a police lookout notice raised questions, as did the reliance on social media posts as substantiating evidence. The investigation by Thrikkakara police continues, with additional documentation awaited by August 25.
