In a significant legislative move, the Rajya Sabha on Thursday approved a motion to refer three crucial bills to a Joint Committee. The motion, spearheaded by Home Minister Amit Shah, calls for a comprehensive review of potential amendments, particularly those concerning the removal of government officials arrested on serious criminal charges.
The three bills set to undergo scrutiny include amendments to the Constitution of India, the Government of Union Territories Act, 1963, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. Despite the din in the house, the Upper House passed the motion with a resolution to nominate ten members to the Joint Committee.
The Lok Sabha had previously passed a similar resolution, ensuring the Joint Committee comprises 21 members from its house and 10 from the Rajya Sabha. The committee aims to present its findings during the Winter Session, likely commencing in the third week of November.
