Amid growing concerns over illegal quarrying in Assam's Karbi Anglong, Gaurav Gogoi, president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, demanded an independent inquiry from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He highlighted the ongoing unregulated extraction in the Panimura Range, lacking valid environmental clearances, which jeopardizes the local ecosystem and community safety.
In his letter to the Prime Minister, Gogoi claimed that quarrying operations had vastly exceeded legal extraction limits, causing severe air and noise pollution, impacting financial revenues and endangering locals. Gogoi argued that these issues reflect a larger pattern of unauthorized mineral extraction facilitated by a syndicate with cross-border operations in Assam and Meghalaya.
Gogoi called attention to possible collusion amongst operators, political leaders, and officials, urging immediate suspension of illicit activities and calling for accountability to extend beyond just the quarry operators to include officials and political facilitators. His appeal stressed the need for governance integrity and public trust restoration.
