In Mizoram, a surge in cross-border and local crimes has led to the arrest of 460 foreigners over the past five years. Among these, a majority of 439 were Myanmar nationals involved in a range of offenses from drug trafficking to burglary.

Data accessed by PTI reveals that the Mizoram Police have also confiscated narcotics valued at Rs 770.95 crore over the same period. The number of arrest cases peaked in 2022, particularly in the aftermath of Myanmar's military coup, with arrests continuing steadily through 2025.

The police report indicates that Mizoram struggles with substantial volumes of drug trafficking, primarily from Southeast Asia. As a result, foreign nationals were mainly held under the Foreigners Act, and drug confiscations have grown consistently since 2023, topping Rs 211.63 crore in 2024.
