Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha member Narayan Rane appeared in a Mumbai court on Monday, pleading not guilty in a defamation case initiated by Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut. The legal dispute stems from remarks Rane made in early 2023, which Raut claims were defamatory.

The judicial proceedings are set to advance with witness examinations starting November 11. Raut's action was instigated following comments Rane allegedly made during the Konkan Festival in January, where he claimed Raut's name was absent from the voters' list.

Previously, a special court rejected Rane's challenge to the summons, acknowledging that Rane made vague and unsubstantiated statements, thus fulfilling the criteria for defamation under Indian law.
