Belgium Joins Global Push to Recognize Palestinian State
Belgium has announced its plan to formally recognize a Palestinian state, a move seen as increasing international pressure on Israel. The decision aligns with a joint diplomatic initiative by France and Saudi Arabia, aiming to signal condemnation of Israel's actions in Gaza and support a two-state solution.
Belgium is set to recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly, Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot announced on Tuesday. This decision follows similar actions by countries such as Australia, Britain, Canada, and France, intensifying global pressure on Israel.
The recognition move aligns with the New York Declaration, which seeks a peaceful coexistence of a Palestinian state alongside Israel. Meanwhile, the international community remains divided over Israel's actions in Gaza, with mixed reactions from European Union nations.
Accompanying this decision, Belgium plans to implement 12 sanctions against Israel, including import bans on settlement products. Despite opposition from the U.S. administration, Belgium continues to commit to Palestine's reconstruction and advocate against antisemitism.
