Bulgarian authorities announced the arrest of Igor Grechushkin, a Russian ship owner wanted in connection with the 2020 Beirut explosion. Grechushkin's detention occurred at Sofia International Airport, upon his arrival from Paphos, Cyprus. He faces possible extradition to Lebanon to address long-standing charges.
According to Bulgarian border police, Grechushkin cooperated fully during his arrest, and his luggage revealed nothing suspicious. The arrest was executed following an Interpol red notice, and was confirmed by Lebanese officials on Tuesday. Grechushkin remains in custody, pending possible extradition procedures.
The chemical compound ammonium nitrate, linked to Grechushkin's vessel, was central to the disastrous explosion that claimed 218 lives and caused extensive damage in Beirut. With no Lebanese officials convicted in connection to the blast, the arrest marks a significant development in ongoing investigations.
