In a significant move, the Taliban has enforced a ban on fiber optic internet in Balkh province, citing moral concerns. The decision has left government offices, businesses, and homes without WIFI access, marking the first such restriction since the Taliban assumed power in August 2021.

Haji Attaullah Zaid, a spokesman for the provincial government, confirmed the complete shutdown, stating the order came from Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada. While mobile internet remains operational, the fiber optic ban impacts various sectors reliant on high-speed connectivity.

The administration has yet to clarify why Balkh was singled out or whether the ban will extend to other regions. Historically, Afghan authorities have also suspended mobile networks for security during crucial periods, including religious festivals.
