A plea submitted to the Kerala High Court has called for a ban on the sale, circulation, and display of Booker Prize winner Arundhati Roy's book, 'Mother Mary Come to Me,' due to its cover image portraying her smoking without a statutory health warning.
A bench with Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Basant Balaji has requested the central government to clarify if a mechanism exists to address these concerns. The hearing is scheduled for September 25.
The petitioner, a Kochi-based lawyer named Rajasimhan, claims the image promotes a misleading message to society, glamorizing smoking and violating the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003.
