Former Meghalaya minister and NPP legislator Rakkam A Sangma faced a roadblock by protestors at Jorabat on Thursday, requiring Assam Police intervention to proceed to Garo Hills, officials confirmed.

The blockade impacted several tourists and travelers as protestors obstructed vehicles at the interstate entry point, exacerbating the situation further.

A boisterous crowd from Assam demanded Sangma return to Meghalaya, with protestors urging his convoy to turn back. Sangma later posted a video of the altercation, indicating that he narrowly bypassed the blockade with police support.

The incident coincided with an ongoing protest by the All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association (AKMTTA), seeking a prohibition on Assam tourist taxis in Meghalaya's tourist spots.

This staunch stance has fueled animosity on both sides, intensifying tensions. In response, Sangma called for restraint and dialogue, stressing a cooperative resolution to prevent adverse consequences for individuals on either side.
