South Africa and U.S. Seek to Resolve High Trade Tariffs Tensions
South African Trade Minister Parks Tau has initiated talks with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to negotiate a rollback of the high tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. Amidst economic struggles, both countries aim to establish a roadmap for future engagement and resolve ongoing trade and diplomatic issues.

In an effort to address the escalating trade tensions between the United States and South Africa, Trade Minister Parks Tau held discussions with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. The meeting is seen as a bid by Africa's largest economy to negotiate relief from the severe U.S. tariffs recently imposed.
The 30% tariff, instituted by U.S. President Donald Trump, poses a significant threat to South Africa's fragile economy, which is grappling with growth challenges and high unemployment rates. The punitive tariff, the steepest in Sub-Saharan Africa, could result in substantial job losses.
While South Africa's trade ministry reported a constructive meeting, U.S. trade officials have remained silent on the deliberations. The diplomatic rift broadens, fuelled by Trump's contentious allegations of discrimination against South Africa's white minority, impacting bilateral ties.
