Following devastating rain-induced disasters across Himachal Pradesh, the state's regulations under the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) have been amended, increasing annual work days from 100 to 150, officials announced Friday. This adjustment specifically targets regions hardest hit by the disasters.
According to an official statement, the entire state has been declared calamity-hit, naturally raising the demand under MGNREGA. The Union Ministry of Agriculture, Farmers' Welfare and Rural Development has thus recommended, and approved, additional man-days.
These additional work days will commence with the agreement of both state and Central governments, utilizing budgets for already sanctioned projects. The state has suffered losses amounting to Rs 4,754 crore, with 427 casualties in rain-related incidents since the monsoon began on June 20.
