The Punjab government has taken disciplinary action following the tragic collapse of two floodgates at the Madhopur headworks in Pathankot last month. Amid heavy rain and flooding, three officers, including an executive engineer, were suspended after officials were trapped on-site, resulting in one fatality.
On August 27, amid rising waters, two out of 54 floodgates failed during the release of excess water from the Ravi River. The trapped officials needed airlifting, and the body of one missing official was later recovered. The incident released over 2 lakh cusecs of water, exacerbating the flood situation.
Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal attributed the catastrophe to a private company, which had inaccurately certified the gates as capable of handling 6.25 lakh cusecs of water. The failure, which occurred at half the certified capacity, has prompted the issuance of a notice to the company.
