Thailand and Cambodia are urged to scale back their military presence along the shared border to ease long-standing tensions, as emphasized by Thailand's new foreign minister, Sihasak Phuangketkeow. This call followed his recent induction alongside Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
Sihasak highlighted that securing peace with Cambodia is his top priority. The foreign minister stressed implementing previously agreed joint actions, including force reductions, landmine clearances, and crackdowns on illegal activities, to uphold a ceasefire after July's deadly conflict.
Ongoing disputes over undemarcated sections of the 817 km border, first mapped by France in 1907, have led to violent clashes in the past, resulting in fatalities and displacements. The ceasefire facilitated by Malaysia in July temporarily quelled hostilities, but underlying tensions remain unresolved.
