Court Rules on Jurisdiction in Baltic Sea Cable Case
A Finnish district court ruled it lacks jurisdiction to prosecute crew members of the Eagle S oil tanker for damaging undersea cables. The case underscores challenges in applying international maritime law and proving intent. Tensions rose as NATO increased alertness in the Baltic after the incident.

A Finnish district court has determined that it does not have the jurisdiction to prosecute the captain and two officers of the Eagle S oil tanker. They were accused of severing undersea power and internet cables in the Baltic Sea last year.
This trial marks one of the first attempts to hold individuals accountable for allegedly damaging critical underwater infrastructure. The challenges lie in the complex provisions of international maritime law and the difficulties in proving criminal intent.
Following the December 25 incident, NATO forces in the area heightened their alertness as the Baltic Sea experienced a series of cable and gas pipeline disruptions after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
