Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Friday said the NDA government at the Centre is actively promoting Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanism in the judiciary.

Speaking at a meeting of Telangana BJP's legal cell meeting here, he said while mediation was a part of the country's culture, it lagged behind in implementing it compared to other countries.

''We are taking forward ADR system with speed. ADR is Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanism. We have amended mediation act. We have given legal force to it,'' he said.

As the country remained backward in mediation, the government has to take forward ADR in judiciary under the Atma Nirbhar Bharat (self reliant India) campaign, he said.

Meghwal highlighted the new criminal laws introduced by the NDA government, describing them as major reforms aimed at promoting ease of living.

Citing delays in releasing a prisoner as an example, he said even after magistrate's order, obtaining a certified copy of it and reaching jail superintendent used to be time-consuming.

However, the order of the court is now uploaded on e-Court and e-Prison (portals) and the jail superintendent would release the prisoner. ''Is it not ease of living or not,'' he asked.

The office bearers of Bar Council of Telangana and the BJP's Legal Cell urged the Union Minister to implement Advocate Protection Bill to safeguard the privileges and duties of advocates and provide medical insurance, death benefit and stipend to all junior advocates. Meghwal said the government has entrusted the matter to the Law Commission headed by Justice (retired) Dinesh Maheshwari. ''Let the suggestions come. We will take it forward,'' he said.

Union Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy, state BJP president N Ramchander Rao, who is a senior advocate, BJP MPs K Laxman, M Raghunandan Rao and other leaders were present on the occasion. Earlier, Meghwal attended 'Alai Balai' event hosted by former Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya on the occasion of Dussehra.
