In a significant wildlife crime crackdown, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) successfully seized 6.53 kilograms of Indian pangolin scales in Hanamkonda district, Telangana. This operation, conducted by the Hyderabad Zonal Unit, led to the arrest of four individuals involved in the illegal trade.
Pangolins, listed under Schedule-I of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, are poached across India primarily for their scales. These scales are highly sought after in international black markets, particularly in China and Southeast Asia, where they are used in traditional medicines.
Following the seizure, the detained individuals and the wildlife articles were handed over to the Forest Range Officer in Hanamkonda for further investigation. The international trade of pangolin scales is prohibited, highlighting the importance of stringent enforcement of wildlife protection laws.
