Tension in Ladakh: Supreme Court Seeks Centre's Stand on Wangchuk's Detention

The Supreme Court on Monday took a significant step by seeking a response from the Centre and the Union Territory of Ladakh about the detention of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk. This development comes after his wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, filed a petition challenging his detention under the stringent National Security Act (NSA).

A bench comprising Justices Aravind Kumar and N V Anjaria refrained from issuing any orders on providing the grounds of detention to Wangchuk's wife. The Court has decided to revisit the matter on October 14, keeping the hopes alive for a potential release.

Wangchuk's detention on September 26 followed protests in Ladakh that resulted in four deaths and 90 injuries. The protests were demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status for the region. Presently, Wangchuk remains in Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan.
