A devastating building collapse in central Madrid has claimed the lives of four individuals during its transformation into a hotel. Spanish emergency services recovered the bodies of the victims from the rubble of the six-storey building, which crumbled while under refurbishment, as confirmed by local authorities.
Among the deceased were three male construction workers from Ecuador, Mali, and Guinea-Conakry, as well as a female architect overseeing the renovation. The tragedy unfolded nearly 15 hours after the building's interior collapsed, sparking a frantic search-and-rescue mission employing drones and sniffer dogs. Three additional workers sustained injuries in the incident.
The building, originally constructed in 1965, had been flagged as 'unfavourable' in inspections conducted in 2012 and 2022. Despite these warnings, its redevelopment into a four-star hotel was in progress, overseen by developer Rehbilita and owned by the Saudi-based fund RSR, which specializes in luxury properties across Spain and Portugal.
