A petition was filed in the Calcutta High Court requesting a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the recent assault on BJP MP Khagen Murmu in Nagrakata, North Bengal. This move comes after Murmu and BJP MLA Sankar Ghosh were injured during a visit to the flood-affected regions.
Justice Kausik Chanda has permitted the filing of the petition. Petitioner's lawyer, Anindya Sundar Das, anticipates that the case will be heard on October 14. The legal counsel for the petitioner, Sayan Chattopadhyay, has also sought charges under the Scheduled Caste (SC)/Scheduled Tribe (ST) Act, emphasizing Murmu's ST community status.
The attack occurred during the politicians' visit to areas recovering from heavy rains over the weekend, which severely impacted multiple districts such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar.
