The Telangana High Court has intervened to put a halt on a government order that proposed 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in local governance. This decision came amidst preparations for upcoming Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency (MPTC) and Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) elections.
A division bench led by Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice GM Mohiuddin heard the petitions challenging the state's order. The bench has given the government four weeks to respond, with an additional two weeks for petitioners to reply, ensuring a halt in the elections scheduled based on the increased BC quota.
The controversy stems from the state's decision to boost BC reservations from 24% to 42%, exceeding the 50% ceiling on reservations set by the Supreme Court. No exceptions are permitted for backward classes, according to the petitioners.
