In a new escalation of tensions in the South China Sea, the Chinese coast guard unleashed powerful water cannons and engaged in ramming tactics against the Philippine vessel BRP Datu Pagbuaya near Thitu Island on Sunday, according to the Philippine coast guard. No injuries were reported among the Filipino crew.
The confrontation marks the latest episode in a prolonged territorial dispute involving several nations. The Chinese forces targeted the Philippine fisheries vessel anchored to support local fishermen, despite existing claims and an arbitration ruling against China's extensive territorial assertions.
Condemnation swiftly followed from the United States, which called out China's actions as violative of international law and reaffirmed its support for its Philippine ally. Beijing, on the other hand, justified its response by accusing the Philippine vessels of unauthorized entry into Chinese-claimed waters.
