The Supreme Court has ordered a CBI investigation into the Karur stampede, a tragic incident that claimed the lives of 41 individuals. The court's decision came after a series of pleas demanding an independent inquiry.
A bench comprising Justices J K Maheshwari and N V Anjaria appointed former apex court judge Ajay Rastogi to oversee the investigation. Tamil actor Vijay's political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, and others had filed petitions seeking an impartial probe, citing mistrust in the Tamil Nadu Police conducting the investigation alone.
The bench has agreed to hear BJP leader Uma Anandan's challenge to a high court decision against a CBI probe. Allegations of a pre-planned conspiracy and critical remarks against political figures involved have intensified calls for a fair investigation. The rally linked to the stampede saw a turnout significantly exceeding expectations, attributed partly to delays by Vijay.
