The Enforcement Directorate (ED) intensified its investigation into self-styled godman Ashok Kharat by conducting fresh raids in Maharashtra's Nashik district, officials confirmed on Friday. The search operation focused on a site in Sharanpur town, unearthing documents and computer peripherals that could provide incriminating evidence against the controversial figure.
Earlier, on April 13, the ED had initiated the first round of searches at Kharat's residential and commercial premises, involving his chartered accountant Prakash Pophale and various relatives. These investigations led to the seizure of Rs 42 lakh in cash and the freezing of assets worth Rs 2.4 crore. However, the ownership of these assets remains uncertain.
Charged with extortion, religious manipulation, and drug-facilitated assaults, Kharat was arrested following complaints from a woman accusing him of repeated rape. The Maharashtra government has formed a special investigative team to delve into these allegations, fueling political controversy as photos and purported videos of Kharat with politicians circulated widely online.
