The Delhi High Court on Tuesday took a stern stance against local authorities for failing to provide personal security officers (PSOs) to judicial officers, pointing out that such protections are available in other states.
Justice Manoj Jain chastised the Delhi Police during a hearing of a Judicial Service Association of Delhi petition, arguing that the lack of security could undermine the judiciary's independence. He questioned whether the authorities were treating security as a mere act of charity only considered when there's a threat perception.
The court urged budgetary considerations for security provisions, acknowledging that Delhi's crime rates warranted immediate protective measures for the over 700 judicial officers in the capital. The court further scheduled the next hearing for May.
