Meghalaya's Deputy Chief Minister, Sniawbhalang Dhar, announced that border negotiations with Assam are set to resume once the neighboring state forms a new government. The ongoing dialogue hinges on the establishment of Assam's regional committees, which are integral to resolving the long-standing border dispute.
Dhar highlighted that while there is no fixed timeline to settle the issue, efforts to find a resolution are continuous. Noting the complexity of the border disagreement, he admitted it might not be resolved swiftly. Meanwhile, both states have made progress by signing MoUs for six of the twelve disputed areas along their borders.
On the development front, Dhar revealed that the Shillong airport expansion project is moving forward, with tenders awarded and construction slated to begin soon. The project aims for completion within 18 months, with the state government seeking further details about the contractor and the construction timeline from the Centre.
