In a decisive action against crime, police in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat district successfully dismantled a notorious interstate cattle theft gang, officials announced on Thursday. The operation resulted in the arrest of three men following a dramatic encounter.
The joint effort between the Singhawali Ahir police and a surveillance team transpired during a routine night check on Wednesday. As authorities attempted to intercept a suspicious pickup vehicle, its occupants attempted to escape, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Two suspects, identified as Noman and Ummed, sustained injuries, while a third, Rizwan alias Riju, was apprehended without harm.
According to police reports, the gang had been active in several districts of western Uttar Pradesh, such as Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, and Baghpat, as well as parts of Haryana. Authorities recovered a stolen Mahindra Bolero pickup, illegal firearms, live ammunition, and tools used for binding animals. Superintendent of Police Suraj Kumar Rai confirmed further investigations are underway, with a cash reward for the police team involved.
