In a major push toward transforming India’s urban mobility landscape, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry and Member of Parliament from Mumbai North, Shri Piyush Goyal, inaugurated the Bharat Taxi driver onboarding initiative in Mumbai, marking a significant milestone in the platform’s national expansion.

The onboarding drive, held at Kamla Vihar Sports Club, Kandivali West, saw enthusiastic participation from hundreds of auto-rickshaw and cab drivers, transport unions, and cooperative associations, reflecting strong grassroots support for technology-enabled, driver-centric mobility solutions.

Empowering Drivers Through Technology and Cooperative Models

Addressing the gathering, Shri Piyush Goyal highlighted the importance of digital platforms and cooperative frameworks in reshaping India’s mobility ecosystem.

“Bharat Taxi represents a model where drivers are not just service providers but partners. With access to digital tools, they can achieve greater transparency, improved earnings, and enhanced dignity of labour,” he said.

He emphasized that such initiatives are aligned with the future of smart, inclusive, and sustainable urban transport systems in India.

Building a Driver-First Mobility Ecosystem

The Mumbai onboarding initiative is part of a broader national effort to create a driver-first mobility ecosystem, focusing on:

  • Simplified onboarding and registration processes

  • Improved access to ride demand through digital integration

  • Greater operational transparency

  • Stable and enhanced income opportunities for drivers

By addressing long-standing challenges in the sector—such as inconsistent earnings and lack of formal structures—the initiative aims to create a more equitable and sustainable platform for drivers.

Rapid Growth Across Cities

Bharat Taxi’s expansion into Mumbai adds to its growing footprint across major cities, including:

  • Delhi NCR

  • Gujarat

  • Chandigarh

  • Lucknow

The platform’s operational scale highlights its rapid adoption:

  • Over 5.17 lakh drivers onboarded

  • More than 50 lakh customers registered

  • Nearly 10 lakh rides facilitated monthly

These figures indicate increasing trust among both drivers and commuters in organized, technology-driven mobility networks.

Mumbai: A Key Growth Market

Speaking at the event, Shri Vivek Pandey, COO of Bharat Taxi, described Mumbai as a high-potential market for expansion.

He noted that strong collaboration with local driver unions has:

  • Boosted onboarding momentum

  • Strengthened trust in the platform

  • Reinforced Bharat Taxi’s commitment to building a robust driver ecosystem

National Vision for Cooperative Mobility

The initiative aligns with the broader vision of Union Home and Cooperation Minister Shri Amit Shah, who has envisioned expanding Bharat Taxi to all major cities across India within the next three years.

Mumbai’s inclusion is seen as a critical milestone in this roadmap, given its scale, density, and complex mobility demands.

Toward Inclusive and Transparent Urban Transport

The Bharat Taxi model reflects a shift toward:

  • Cooperative ownership structures

  • Technology-driven transparency

  • Inclusive participation of drivers in platform economies

This approach is increasingly relevant as India’s urban population grows and demand for efficient, affordable mobility solutions rises.

A New Chapter in India’s Mobility Transformation

The Mumbai onboarding initiative underscores the government’s continued focus on leveraging technology to empower workers, particularly in sectors like transport where informal employment has traditionally dominated.

By integrating drivers into structured digital ecosystems, Bharat Taxi aims to:

  • Improve livelihoods

  • Enhance commuter experience

  • Build a resilient and scalable urban mobility framework

As India moves toward smarter cities and digital-first infrastructure, initiatives like Bharat Taxi are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of inclusive, transparent, and driver-centric mobility solutions.
