In a major push towards inclusive and affordable rail connectivity, Indian Railways is set to launch two new weekly Amrit Bharat Express trains connecting key cities in Uttar Pradesh with Maharashtra via Madhya Pradesh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the Banaras–Hadapsar (Pune) and Ayodhya–Mumbai (Lokmanya Tilak Terminus) services on April 28, 2026.

The introduction of these trains marks a significant step in strengthening economic, cultural, and pilgrimage linkages across some of India’s most densely populated and economically active regions.

Designed for the Common Man

The Amrit Bharat Express trains are tailored for low- and middle-income passengers, offering a modern yet affordable travel experience. Fully non-AC, these trains feature General and Sleeper class coaches along with enhanced safety and passenger-centric amenities.

Key features include:

  • Push-pull locomotive technology for better speed and efficiency

  • CCTV surveillance and emergency talk-back systems for enhanced safety

  • Aerosol-based fire suppression systems

  • Improved seating and berth design inspired by Vande Bharat Sleeper

  • Mobile charging ports (USB Type-A & Type-C)

  • Divyangjan-friendly facilities and better lighting

  • Sealed gangways and upgraded toilets

These upgrades aim to deliver a safer, smoother, and more comfortable journey, especially for long-distance travellers.

Boost to Pilgrimage and Migration Corridors

The new routes are strategically designed to serve both pilgrimage circuits and migrant worker corridors.

  • The Banaras–Pune service enhances access to Kashi Vishwanath Dham while linking Uttar Pradesh’s cultural hub with Pune’s booming IT and industrial economy.

  • The Ayodhya–Mumbai service strengthens connectivity to the Shri Ram Mandir, while also serving millions of migrant workers traveling between North India and Mumbai.

By providing direct, affordable connections, the trains eliminate the need for multiple transfers, significantly reducing travel time, cost, and inconvenience.

Economic and Regional Impact

The trains traverse key agricultural, industrial, and educational hubs including Prayagraj, Jhansi, Bhopal, Itarsi, Jalgaon, Nashik, and Jabalpur—regions that play a crucial role in India’s economy.

This enhanced connectivity is expected to:

  • Improve market access for farmers and traders

  • Facilitate labour mobility and employment opportunities

  • Boost religious tourism in cities like Varanasi, Ayodhya, Shirdi, and Nashik

  • Support students and professionals traveling between major education and job hubs

The Banaras–Pune route alone will cover around 18 stops over a 30-hour journey, while the Ayodhya–Mumbai service will complete its journey in approximately 28 hours with 12 key stops.

Strengthening India’s Rail Network

With the addition of these two services, the total number of operational Amrit Bharat Express trains will rise to 64, reflecting Indian Railways’ commitment to expanding accessible rail infrastructure.

While premium trains like Vande Bharat have redefined high-speed travel, the Amrit Bharat Express is emerging as a game-changer for affordable, long-distance connectivity, catering to millions of ordinary Indians.

A Vision of Inclusive Mobility

These new services represent more than just transportation—they symbolize a broader vision of inclusive development, connecting faith, livelihoods, and aspirations across regions.

By bridging urban economic centres with rural heartlands and pilgrimage destinations, Indian Railways continues to reinforce its role as the backbone of national integration and socio-economic progress.
