The Western Cape Mobility Department has issued an urgent call for applications to its Traffic Officer Cadet Bursary Programme, offering young South Africans a pathway into law enforcement and road safety careers as the 5 May 2026 deadline rapidly approaches.

The highly sought-after programme provides successful candidates with the opportunity to complete a Further Education and Training (FET) Certificate in Road Traffic Law Enforcement, equipping them with the skills required to serve as fully qualified Traffic Officers across the province.

A Direct Pipeline into Law Enforcement Careers

Set to commence on 8 June 2026, the intensive 12-month training programme will be hosted at the Gene Louw Traffic College in Brackenfell, Cape Town — one of the country’s leading institutions for traffic law enforcement training.

Upon completion, graduates will be deployed to traffic centres across the Western Cape, strengthening enforcement capacity and contributing to safer roads in one of South Africa’s busiest provinces.

Provincial officials say the programme is not only a training initiative but a strategic investment in public safety and youth employment.

“This bursary programme offers a valuable opportunity for young people to build a career in law enforcement while making a real impact on road safety in the Western Cape,” said Chief Director for Traffic Management, Maxine Bezuidenhout.

Targeting Youth for Impact and Opportunity

The department is specifically encouraging applications from disciplined, committed, and physically fit individuals aged 35 and younger, reflecting a broader effort to bring new talent into the traffic enforcement sector.

With road safety remaining a national concern — particularly in high-traffic provinces like the Western Cape — the programme aims to bolster frontline enforcement while creating structured career pathways for young people.

Candidates selected for the bursary will undergo rigorous training that combines:

  • Traffic law and regulatory frameworks

  • Road safety enforcement techniques

  • Practical field training and simulations

  • Physical fitness and discipline development

This holistic approach ensures that graduates are fully prepared for the operational demands of traffic policing.

Zero Fees, Zero Tolerance for Scams

Authorities have issued a strong warning to applicants about fraudulent schemes attempting to exploit job seekers.

The department emphasised that:

  • No payment is required at any stage of the application process

  • Applications must be submitted only via the official Western Cape Government Jobs portal

“We caution residents about scams targeting applicants. There are no fees required for this programme,” Bezuidenhout stressed.

This warning comes amid a rise in recruitment-related scams across South Africa, particularly targeting youth seeking government opportunities.

Supporting Safer Roads and Economic Inclusion

Beyond employment, the bursary programme is part of a broader provincial strategy to improve road safety outcomes through increased enforcement visibility and professionalism.

By investing in trained personnel, the Western Cape aims to:

  • Reduce road accidents and fatalities

  • Strengthen compliance with traffic laws

  • Enhance public confidence in law enforcement

  • Create sustainable employment opportunities

For many applicants, the programme represents a rare chance to access fully funded training in a specialised field with direct employment prospects.

Final Call Before Deadline

With just days remaining before applications close, officials are urging eligible candidates not to delay.

“If you are passionate about road safety and want to make a difference, this is your opportunity,” the department said.

Applications close on 5 May 2026, and late submissions will not be considered.
