The Jharkhand BJP on Wednesday said it would launch a week-long agitation starting May 6 over the alleged water crisis in the eastern state. The party leaders claimed that over 80,000 hand pumps were out of order in the state. ''Despite the Centre spending Rs 12,764 crore, the 'Har Ghar Nal Se Jal' (tap water in every household) scheme is not showing effective results on the ground in Jharkhand. ''In most areas, water supply is crippled and taps are completely dry,'' Jharkhand BJP president Aditya Sahu told reporters at the party headquarters in Ranchi. Sahu said that in 2019, 3.45 lakh rural households had access to a tap water connection, and this figure rose to 34.42 lakh households in 2025. ''Around 45 per cent of rural households are still deprived of tap water connections. Meanwhile, 80,000 hand pumps are out of order amid scorching heat. The toll-free number provided by the government to repair the defunct hand pumps within 72 hours is also not working,'' Sahu alleged. He said party workers would stage demonstrations in Garhwa, Palamu and Latehar on May 6, Chaibasa, Jamshedpur and Saraikela-Kharswan on May 7, Hazaribag, Chatra, Koderma and Ramgarh on May 8, Dumka, Pakur, Sahibganj, Godda, Deoghar and Jamtara on May 9, Giridih, Dhanbad and Bokaro on May 11 and Ranchi, Lohardaga, Simdega, Gumla and Khunti on May 12.
