A sheep herder bathing his livestock at the bank of the Chambal river here on Wednesday morning was killed after a crocodile emerged from the river and pulled him into deep waters, police said. The incident took place near Ghatodh village under Khatoli police station when Murari Gurjar (45), his son Chandra Prakash (22), and Golu (20) were bathing the livestock at the Chambal river bank near the village. A crocodile burst out from the river and attacked Murari and Chandra Prakash, who were on the edge of the water. While Chandra Prakash managed to escape the mighty reptile, it had Murari in its jaw and pulled him into deep waters. After an alarm was raised, villagers rushed to the spot and launched a search for the herder. Police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were also informed. Chandra Prakash was rushed to hospital, where he was given primary medical care before being discharged. After a nearly four-hour-long search by villagers and authorities, the body of the deceased herder was found around 30 metres from the bank, in the deep stretch of the river, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Om Prakash said. A post-mortem was conducted later in the day and the body was subsequently handed over to family members. A case has been registered under Section 194 (unnatural death) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) for investigation into the matter, the DSP said. Police officials also appealed to villagers and animal herders not to go near the river in isolated areas.
