Britain Acts Against State-Sponsored Threats Amid Rising Antisemitic Attacks
Britain announced new legislation to address state-sponsored threats as two Jewish men were recently stabbed in an antisemitic attack. This follows increasing antisemitic incidents amidst global tensions, particularly after the October 2023 Hamas-Israel conflict.
The British government announced plans on Thursday to introduce new legislation targeting state-sponsored threats, amid rising antisemitic attacks including a recent stabbing of two Jewish men. The law aims to prosecute individuals acting as proxies for foreign states like Iran, Russia, and China.
This legislative move comes following charges against two men linked to Tehran and convictions of others in attacks targeting Ukraine-linked entities. Accusations against countries like Iran are denied by the respective governments, which claim political motivations are at play.
Additional security measures and funding are also introduced, especially around Jewish targets, as antisemitic incidents surge since the October 2023 conflict between Hamas and Israel. Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood emphasized that combating antisemitism through education and security is crucial.
