US-UN Financial Standoff: Billions Owed and Non-Negotiable
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the non-negotiable nature of the billions owed by the US. Reports indicate US conditions tied to monetary release, demanding UN reforms, including cost-cutting and reducing China's influence. Guterres reiterates efforts for effective operation amid financial stress.
In a bold statement, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres declared on Thursday that the billions of dollars owed by the United States to the UN are 'non-negotiable.' This remark follows reports that Washington attached conditions for releasing the funds aimed at reforming the world body.
According to a report by Devex, the US set forth conditions including cost-cutting measures and moves to counter China's burgeoning influence. The demands also advocated reforming the UN pension system and streamlining travel expenses. Guterres maintained that while reform and funding are parallel issues, they must be addressed separately.
The situation arises amidst increasing financial pressure, with the UN warning of potential financial collapse due to these dues. The US, having paid only a fraction of its debt, continues to insist on reforms, adding tension to the already strained relationship between the two entities.
