In a shocking case that has taken the nation by storm, a 14-year-old boy from Qujing, Yunnan Province, China, has been handed a life sentence for the horrific rape and murder of his classmate.
The Intermediate People's Court of Qujing delivered the sentence earlier this week. The boy, known by his surname Jiang, confined his 15-year-old classmate overnight last July, attacked her, and ultimately took her life by strangling her.
While the heinousness of Jiang's actions merited the harshest punishment, the Chinese legal system does not permit the death penalty for minors. This case has sparked widespread discussion regarding juvenile justice in China.
