Tension on the High Seas: Activists Clash with Israeli Forces in Humanitarian Flotilla Crisis
Over 100 pro-Palestinian activists were detained by Israeli forces in the Mediterranean while attempting to deliver aid to Gaza. Despite international criticism, Israel maintains its legal blockade. Two activists were arrested, sparking diplomatic tensions, while mistreatment allegations surfaced amidst ongoing efforts to break the blockade.
More than 100 pro-Palestinian activists attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza were diverted to Crete by Israeli forces on Friday, flotilla organizers reported. This was part of a second Global Sumud flotilla aiming to bypass Israel's blockade on Gaza.
Footage showed Israeli forces transferring the activists to Greek boats, which brought them to Crete, where buses and ambulances awaited. Greece's foreign ministry confirmed 176 arrivals, with 31 requiring medical attention. Tensions escalated as Israel's foreign ministry branded the flotilla organizers 'professional provocateurs.'
Two activists, Saif Abu Keshek and Thiago Avila, were detained, sparking diplomatic protests from Spain and Brazil. With ongoing accusations of mistreatment at sea, human rights concerns grow as Israel and the U.S. continue to portray the flotilla as a pro-Hamas initiative.
