Iran Executes Man Linked to Security Officer's Death Amid Protest Turmoil

In a recent development, Iran has executed Mehrab Abdollahzadeh, who was convicted for his role in the killing of a security officer, Abbas Fatemiyeh, amid the country's volatile protest movements in 2022. The judiciary's outlet, Mizan, confirmed the Supreme Court upheld the sentence.

Abdollahzadeh was accused of being a principal figure behind Fatemiyeh's death during widespread demonstrations ignited by Mahsa Amini's death in police custody. Reportedly, Abdollahzadeh confessed to attacking the security officer, escalating tensions surrounding the case.

However, human rights group HRANA cites an informed source claiming Abdollahzadeh was tortured to obtain the confession, raising serious concerns over the fairness of the trial and the methods used to extract statements in such cases.
