Press Freedom Under Siege in Nepal: A Year of Rising Violations

Nepal has witnessed a troubling surge in press freedom violations, with 97 incidents reported over the past year, as detailed in a report by Freedom Forum Nepal. These incidents have impacted 145 media professionals and 20 organizations, marking an increase from the previous year's 68 violations.

Threats, attacks, and obstructions toward journalists have become more frequent, with 28 threats and death warnings, 21 attacks, and 18 acts of obstruction recorded. Additional issues include eight instances of arson, five court cases, and four arrests, reflecting a severe climate for press freedom.

At a rally in Maitighar Mandala, FNJ Chair Nirmala Sharma criticized the government for blocking advertisements to private media, calling it an attempt to silence the press. Meanwhile, Communications Minister Bikram Timilsina stated the government's commitment to maintaining press freedom as a democratic cornerstone.
