Supreme Court Expansion: Judges' Strength Set to Increase
The Union Cabinet has approved a proposal to increase the number of Supreme Court judges from 34 to 38, including the Chief Justice of India. The Union Cabinet has given the nod to a proposal aiming to expand the Supreme Court's strength by four judges, taking the total count, including the Chief Justice of India, to 38.
Currently, the apex court has 33 judges along with the CJI. To implement this change, a bill is slated to be introduced in the upcoming Parliament session.
This amendment continues the historical trend, with previous increases recorded in 1960, 1986, 2009, and most recently, in 2019, underscoring the evolving demands on India's highest judicial body.
