Tensions Surge: China's Unauthorized Marine Research near Reed Bank

The Philippine Coast Guard has leveled serious accusations against China, claiming it is conducting illegal marine scientific research within Manila's exclusive economic zone, particularly near the resource-rich Reed Bank in the South China Sea. Philippine authorities have pledged to oppose any activities that compromise their national sovereignty.

Recent surveillance by PCG aircraft revealed the presence of the Chinese research vessel Xiang Yang Hong 33 near Iroquois Reef on May 6. The vessel was reportedly engaged in unauthorized research operations, a claim backed by evidence of service boats being deployed towards the reef.

The situation is further complicated by the sighting of a Chinese Coast Guard ship and 13 other militia vessels in the area. Notably, China's research endeavors reportedly began on April 15, with operations spanning across multiple locations including Second Thomas Shoal and Jackson Atoll. The Philippines insists that these actions violate both its sovereign rights and international maritime law.
